Filippo Turetta was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin, who he stabbed 75 times in November 2023. Cecchettin, a 22-year-old biomedical engineering student, was killed just days before her graduation from Padua University. Turetta went on the run after committing the crime and was eventually caught in Germany a week later. Giulia’s father, Gino Cecchettin, expressed hope that his daughter’s death would mark a turning point in Italy's fight against gender-based violence. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara also sent a circular to schools urging students to reflect on the issue.
